TORONTO, June 10, 2015 – The Emerging Menswear Designer Award (EMDA) returns to Toronto Men’s Fashion Week’s (TOM*) Spring/Summer 2016 season from Monday, August 17th to Tuesday, August 25th. In partnership with Toronto Fashion Incubator (TFI), EMDA was created to recognize up-and-coming Canadian menswear designers by giving them a national and global platform to showcase their ready to wear menswear collections.

Joao Paulo Guedes, the winner of the EMDA from TOM*s premiere season, has used his award to truly pioneer the breakthrough of menswear design within the industry. EMDA catapulted Guedes into the global spotlight, and he immediately saw his brand propel forward in the fashion and retail industry.

“I think TOM* set the bar for a new men-focused fashion week. TOM* gives the designers a platform to be creative and to show off what they want,” said Guedes. “After winning the EMDA, I have been featured in not only Canadian publications, but in Brazil, Italy, UK and India. I was also invited, right after TOM* season two, to showcase in one of the biggest fashion weeks in Brazil. It has been phenomenal exposure for everyone that participated in TOM*. There are so many talented people in this city, and events like this definitely help us designers succeed and show who we are locally and globally.”

TOM* is looking for its next EMDA winner. Five finalists will be handpicked to showcase their collection on the TOM* runway. The winner will be chosen by a panel of Canada’s top fashion industry professionals.

To be eligible for EMDA, applicants must be Canadian-based emerging menswear designers, and must be in business or designing independently for 2 years or less. The winning designer package includes:

    • $10,000 Cash prize
    • A one-year membership at TFI including mentoring from industry leaders
    • Professional look book images
    • A feature in TOM* Magazine
    • Primetime runway show at TOM* Fall/Winter 2016
